Causes and Risk Factors for Glaucoma

Often referred to as a "silent thief of eyesight," glaucoma is an ocular disease that occurs when excessive pressure builds up in one or both eyes. In turn, that pressure pushes against the eye's optic nerve, which is responsible for transmitting information from the retina to the brain. Permanent vision loss and even blindness can result from glaucoma, especially if it isn't diagnosed and treated in its early stages.

There are many risk factors that could make a person more likely to develop glaucoma. Age is among the most common risk factors, as the disease tends to affect the older population (those 60 and older). However, family history can also play a role, as can certain medications.

Glaucoma Signs and Symptoms

It is important to be aware of the common signs and symptoms of glaucoma. Unfortunately, not everybody experiences noticeable symptoms, and by the time they do, vision loss may be permanent. Still, for those who do experience glaucoma symptoms, they often include:

  • Blurry vision
  • Distorted vision
  • Eye pain

If you have any of these symptoms and have not recently been screened for glaucoma, we highly recommend that you schedule an appointment with our optometrist in San Antonio right away.

How Our San Antonio Optometrist Can Help

Our San Antonio optometrist specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of glaucoma. Specifically, we can perform a screening here in our office that quickly and accurately measures the pressure in both of your eyes. If your reading shows elevated pressure, we can then begin discussing possible treatment and management options to protect you from vision loss.

Our San Antonio eye doctor offers a range of treatment options based on the severity of your glaucoma diagnosis. Typically, we will begin by prescribing a beta blocker medication designed to lower the pressure in the affected eyes. Medicate eye drops can also be useful. In more severe cases that do not respond to eye drops or medication, we may instead recommend laser surgery as a means of relieving pressure on the optic nerve. However, we will always take the time to review your treatment options and answer any questions you may have before moving forward.
