Astigmatism

Do you need to make an appointment with your optometrist to get tested for astigmatism?

Even if you don't deal with nearsightedness or farsightedness, and even if you do, you can experience blurry vision at any distance due to astigmatism. This common eye condition is caused by imperfections of the curvature of the eye, and it can be corrected with glasses or contacts. Here is what your optometrist and Vision Source Castle Hills wants you to know about astigmatism.

.

Sometimes common eye problems go away as soon as your optometrist corrects astigmatism.

Astigmatism causes blurry vision both up close and far away. The constant effort to try to see clearly can result in headaches, eyestrain, and difficulty driving at night. Correcting astigmatism can stop its complications almost immediately.

Astigmatism has some telltale signs.

One of the most reliable indications that you need to come in to see your optometrist and get an eye exam is blurry vision in part of your visual field. If you are nearsighted, everything far away is blurry. If you are farsighted, everything up close is blurry. However, if you have astigmatism, you will have patches of sharp vision and patches of blurry, fuzzy vision. You will have blurred vision in the same part of your field of vision all the time, whether you are looking at something up close or something far away.

Testing for astigmatism is painless.

Your optometrist can get a good idea of whether or not you have astigmatism just from the way you read an eye chart. The eye doctor may also use a device called a keratometer to measure the steepest and flattest meridians of the surface of your corneas. Your optometrist may also use a device called a retinoscope to shine a bright light into your eyes and measure the refractive error caused by irregularities in the surface of the cornea. No complicated imaging procedures or lab tests are necessary for diagnosing astigmatism.

Your optometrist can give you vision correction for astigmatism with glasses or contact lenses.

Astigmatism is corrected with glasses or contact that your optometrist prescribes. Most patients find that contacts lenses give them a wider field of corrected vision, although glasses are less expensive and more convenient. Your optometrist can also refer you to an ophthalmologist for LASIK surgery to correct astigmatism if you'd like.

You don't have to live with blurry vision. Make an appointment with our optometrist at Vision Source Castle Hills!
